Kafka on Labeling
“People label themselves with all sorts of adjectives. I can only pronounce myself as ‘nauseatingly miserable beyond repair’.”
After spending the whole morning sitting on the toilet and browsing Instagram, Kafka was fed up, so he put his phone aside, flushed, and got off the toilet to realize that his legs were numb at this point. After avoiding a near death situation from falling in the bathroom and hitting his head in an unfavorable angle, Kafka walked to his sunny balcony, sat on his old wooden chair and proceeded to open Instagram again. Then he stopped himself, walked into the kitchen to make a nice cup of coffee and went back to the balcony, sat down, and suddenly Kafka realized that he is sitting with his own thoughts. “This is better than Instagram” Kafka remarked to himself. He remembered what it’s like to formulate opinions about life and society, he had the time and mental capacity, so he started scrolling through his thoughts and this is what he told himself:
“People label themselves too much on Instagram with all sorts of adjectives: influencer, artist, activist, photographer, model, believer, tree hugger, vegan, disciple of Jesus. There is a tremendous urge to belong and standout at the same time, and I find that contradictory at some level. I find Pavel at the office very pretentious, he always has something to say even if he doesn’t know what he’s talking about. He also claims to be a ‘Life Coach’ and a ‘Motivational Speaker’. Interestingly enough, one of Pavel’s clients committed suicide last month after listening to Pavel’s motivational talks for about a month straight through one on one sessions. I know one thing about Pavel: he has no concern other than making money. ‘If you can dream it, you can do it’ this is one of his countless motivational quotes on Instagram which bombard my brain every morning while I’m sitting on the toilet. The only one thing that will change after having sessions with Pavel is your wallet size or your bank account. And I don’t mean that you will be making more money. People are so insignificant; I sense that a lot of people don’t realize that, or maybe, they simply refuse to accept that they are insignificant. Humans have evolved to be highly purpose-driven; it’s a way of coping to keep them busy from facing their insignificance. People will wage wars and perform drastic acts as an act of denying their insignificance; I find that kind of funny. And that also might be the same reason why people label themselves on Instagram with all sorts of adjectives. Come to think of it, I can only pronounce myself as ‘nauseatingly miserable beyond repair’.”
